Kyeyo money reduces poverty

PRIVATE inflows from abroad, kyeyo money, greatly reduce poverty across the nation, a Makerere University Business School (MUBS) official has said.

“Remittances raise per capita income and have reduced the poverty ratio in many developing countries,” acting principal James Akampumuza said at pre-CHOGM conference recently.

“The evidence is that kyeyo money has reduced the share of poor people in their population by 11%.”

“For instance, people on kyeyo send money for school fees, buy land, houses and other property, which improves earnings of the Government,” Akampumuza said.

“A 10% increase in the share of kyeyo to the gross domestic product in Uganda would lead to a 1.6% decline in the number of people living in poverty.”

Official statistics show that Commonwealth countries’ migrant remittances exceeded $167b (sh292,250b) in 2005.

Akampumuza added that the remittances are a significant source of external funding for developing Commonwealth countries.

Prof. Timothy Shaw of the University of India said on top of physical investments, kyeyo money could help finance education and health, which are key variables in promoting economic growth.

“The recipient households tend to spend more money on health care and sending children to good schools,” he added.
