Buganda Bumu Europe Convention Launched in London

The inaugural Buganda Bumu Europe Convention was launched by Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga at the Green Towers Community Centre in London. The event attracted a large gathering of Kabaka’s subjects residing in Europe, including from England, Ireland, Scandinavia, and the Rhinelands.

In his keynote address, the Katikkiro called for unity among Buganda’s people abroad, urging them to cherish their cultural heritage and resist attempts by divisive individuals seeking to derail their efforts. He emphasized the importance of self-love and collective pride, stating, “We do not need anyone to love us as long as we love ourselves. Buganda is home to 15 million people. If we remain united, anyone else will have no choice but to join us.”

Drawing comparisons with the influence of the Jewish community in America, the Katikkiro outlined his vision for Buganda’s future, stressing that the kingdom’s people must avoid self-pity and focus on achieving success through unity and determination.

During the convention, the Minister for Local Government and Buganda’s Foreign Affairs, Owek. Joseph Kawuki, echoed the Kabaka’s gratitude towards his people abroad, especially the youth, for their continued loyalty. He encouraged the diaspora community to contribute to the kingdom’s progress by upholding traditions and working together.

The event, which featured a significant turnout of Kabaka’s ministers and chiefs, carried the theme “Buganda in the Diaspora: Technology in Promoting Culture, Traditions, and the Youth.” It highlighted the importance of technology in keeping Buganda’s culture and traditions alive, especially for the younger generation living abroad.
